From a London Window

Sounds of
equipment banging,
a motorcycle accelerating and backfiring,
a motor scooter changing gears,
the hum of wheels on pavement,
vehicles pushing through air
with their speed and bulk,
a man yelling something indistinguishable,
an idling bus,
the background hum of the city.

Sights of
people waiting at a bus stop,
appropriately spaced from one another,
nobody talking, several on their phones,
a sign: Narrow Lanes – Do Not Overtake Cyclists,
two cyclists in rain jackets, one in a t-shirt,
a young women jaywalking
through three lanes of busy traffic,
a pub, an African restaurant, a beauty salon,
a lone tree poking up on a rooftop,
children in school uniforms.

Vision of
my place in the vastness
of past and present
London
