Coyote

He stares at me across the creek,
curious gazing between man and coyote.

Two loners in this vast space.
No sound but for water against stone,

bird calls as ambient soundscape.
Solitude, but do you ever get lonely?

What is your big dream?
Give me your story, the full story,

right from the beginning, I am patient,
I have time to listen.

Tell me, trickster, how you have been foolish?
Tell me to make me laugh.

Give me your stealth and your courage.
Give me your wisdom of the forest

and prairies and nature.  How do you see the world,
the shifting planet, the changing landscape,

the eroding countryside?  Yes, I know you are tenacious
and adaptable, but are you worried?

Do you not fear the loss of your freedom, your wandering ways,
your sources of nourishment?  Or is it all humour to you?

Well, I sure do worry.
Let me worry enough for two.
