How fabulous,
that team from Edmonton,
down three games to zero
in the Stanley Cup final,
pulling off an 8-1 win.
Now there’s a message!
McDavid breaking 99’s most-assists-in-a-playoff record,
which I never thought I would see done in my lifetime,
me with a glass of wine in my hand afterward,
pacing the floor in my temporary apartment,
reading Barney’s Version,
the great Canadian novel,
how Barney ignored his wife on his wedding night
to watch the Habs beat the Maple Leafs 2-1
in the Stanley Cup final.
I commiserate.
I want to check what year Mordecai Richler
was referring to in the story,
but I’m too absorbed in the glory of the Edmonton win
and the warmth of Richler’s great book,
and, lordy…
isn’t it just an amazing day to be alive in Canada!
