The Hawk and the Snake

I happen upon a hawk
that has trapped
a garter snake
on the abandoned railroad tracks
with its talons.
The snake tries to bite
the hawk
repeatedly,
and the hawk flutters
its wings
each time.
They dance and dance and dance,
and I join by checking my watch
frequently,
in rhythm,
wondering how
long this will last.
Finally, finally, the hawk flies off,
the snake squirming
in its talons,
and I wonder what the hawk
had been waiting for.
