Interesting question.
Yeah, I think I’m a pretty honest guy.
But I’ve lied to others a lot in my lifetime,
for all the reasons most people lie,
to avoid negative consequences,
to maintain my privacy,
to avoid embarrassment.
I’ve never lied just for the joy of it, though,
except with telemarketers.
“Sorry, I can’t talk, I’m in the middle of interrogating a suspect.
Give me your number and I’ll call you back.”
Haha, you can’t buy that kind of enjoyment for a dollar.
I didn’t make it a habit, however,
to lie to the people close to me.
I didn’t want to hurt them, and besides,
it’s practically impossible to remember what lies
you tell to different people.
Today, I mostly just lie to myself:
I love retirement. I hate retirement.
I love where I live. I want to live somewhere else.
I want to enjoy wine. I want to stay sober.
I want to continue to travel widely. I want to stay home.
I want to grow old. I want to die young.
Lies. Lies. Lies. All lies.
Depending on the day, of course.
