Charles Cafe Yerevan

The cafe must see many tourists since it is right next to the most popular attraction in Yerevan – The Cascades.
I’m offered a seat inside the cafe, out of the chill, and given a menu written solely in English.
The cafe is a bit classy, elegantly designed with a few generic art pieces on the wall – faux tree leaves, coloured gold, inside frames – and a handful of houseplants sitting in the window sill.
It’s not really to my taste.
It lacks pizzazz.
It’s too, well, vanilla, though I do like vanilla sometimes, just not today.
I don’t really belong here in my bohemian hat and hiker’s clothes.
Everyone else is so well dressed in designer clothes, and all of the women at one of the tables have Botox lips.
My server is well trained and nicely dressed in a burgundy sweater and black skirt, she carries herself proudly, and she takes my order without needing a notebook.
She fits the decor of the cafe, sleek and neat.
I ask her about the cake another guest is eating.
She tells me the name, but the words are unfamiliar, and I order it anyway, along with a cappuccino and a sparkling water.
When it arrives, I take a bite of the cake and nearly pass out, it’s so good.
I think to ask the server for the name of the cake again, but I forget before I leave.
The cake finished, I take my time with the water and cappuccino, enjoying the background light jazz music with French lyrics.
